For nine years, I’ve had the joy of sharing my life with Jonathan. He is my best friend, my partner, and now my husband. To live alongside him is to witness a constant dance of curiosity, humor, and resilience—no matter what challenges come our way.
When he told me he wanted to write a memoir, I knew it would be an undertaking. But I also knew that when Jonathan puts his mind to something, he becomes solely focused. Watching him wake up earlier and earlier—every day—to write, before he started his “real job”, was awe inspiring. He worked tirelessly to create something true, to share his story so he could help someone else going through a similar situation. After reading his first draft, it became clear to me this book was going to be more than just a retelling of events, it was a kind of excavation. I witnessed a cracking open of his self as he delved deeper into his thoughts and emotions, and reflected back on all he has experienced.
Jonathan views life as a beautiful exploration, grateful for every moment, the pain as much as the joy. This outlook is one of the things I admire most about him, along with his never-ending optimism, which balances my own constant expectation of disaster. A spirit of hope and resilience is woven throughout his writing, and what shines most clearly is his enduring strength and his capacity to love. He loves his life and all it has to offer. Sharing so openly takes great courage, and he has done so with remarkable candor in this book.
This memoir is not just about a cancer diagnosis and the adventure of paragliding—it’s about uncovering light where shadows fall. Even in the hardest moments, Jonathan reveals that there is meaning to be found. Through these pages, I came to see him in new ways, but I also came to see my life differently. My hope is that readers, too, will walk away with a renewed sense of gratitude.
As you turn the pages, I hope you will feel inspired. This memoir is a gift, not just from my husband to those who know him, but to anyone who has ever longed to find a reason to follow their dream. As Jonathan says, “Life is short, learn to fly.” It is my joy and honor to share him, and this story, with you.
